Lapworth Museum, Birmingham

We have arranged a group visit to the museum and will be met early afternoon by the Director of the Museum Jonathan Clatworthy and his staff. There will be a brief presentation regarding the history of the Lapworth Museum, a gallery tour, and a look behind the scenes at both the specimen based stores and the archives.

The Lapworth Museum of Geology is one of the oldest geological museums in the UK. It was founded in 1880, and is named after Charles Lapworth, the first Professor of Geology at Mason College, the forerunner to the University of Birmingham. The collection is wide ranging - minerals, fossils, historical items, evolution of life and Active Earth galleries. The museum is fully accessible and open to the public 10-4pm.

Train leaving Oxenhome at 9.25, Lancaster 9.40 arrives at University at 12.30 Return train 16.39 from University Birmingham station, arrives Oxenholme 19.34. Currently £44 with Senior pass.(The later return at 17.39 is a bit cheaper.)

The museum entry is free but like all museums suggest donations are very welcome.
Lunch: Either buy something at Birmingham New Street (about 17m to change trains) or bring your own.
